Portrait of Giovanni Battista Cattaneo
The sitter has been identified by the traces of an inscription on the letter in the sitter's right hand, which reads: "To Giovanni Battista Cattaneo, Genoa". The provenance of the painting, which was owned by the Cattaneo family in Genoa, supports this identification. It was painted in the mid-1620s when Van Dyck was living and working in Genoa.
