The Marriage of the Virgin

According to legend, suitors for the hand of the Virgin presented rods at the temple in Jerusalem; she was to marry the man whose rod flowered. Here, Joseph's rod has blossomed into a dove. The Virgin's parents, Joachim and Anna, are in the background, identified by their haloes.
