Saint Bernard's Vision of the Virgin

This scene may depict the dialogue between the Virgin and Saint Bernard about Christ's Passion, as told in the saint's book on the subject (shown on the desk in front of him). The shape of the picture suggests a position above a door. It is likely the work came from the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence where a payment for an overdoor was recorded in May 1447.
