The two poets are surrounded by the damned as they sail across the lake to the infernal city of Dis. Delacroix used contrasts of light and shade and references to the painters Michelangelo (1475-1564) and Rubens (1577-1640) to create a new style of painting, soon to be qualified as 'Romantic'.
