After his imprisonment following the fall of Robespierre, Jacques Louis David stayed with his brother-in-law in the country. This luminous portrait of the latter as a horse rider relaxing in the open air has an aristocratic elegance reminiscent of the art of the Flemish painter Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641).
