This is perhaps one of the first paintings by Domenico Ghirlandaio, still strongly influenced by his master Andrea del Verrocchio (1436-1488). The opening with columns, looking into a landscape, was borrowed from a painting by Hans Memling (1433-1494), reflecting Ghirlandaio's taste for Flemish art.
