Die Dargestellte wurde traditionell als Lucrezia Crivelli, Geliebte von Ludovico Sforza, Herzog von Mailand, identifiziert, diese Identität wurde jedoch nie bestätigt. Einige Kritiker halten es für ein Porträt von Ludovicos Frau Beatrice d'Este oder von Isabella von Aragon. Der Titel La Belle Ferronnière ergibt sich aus einer Verwechslung mit einem anderen Porträt.

The sitter has traditionally been identified as Lucrezia Crivelli, mistress of Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan, but this identity has never been confirmed.
