A Satyr mourning over a Nymph
This is the backboard of a bench or chest in a Florentine palace. The subject may be the story of Procris and Cephalus, derived from Ovid. Procris heard false reports of the infidelity of her husband, Cephalus, and spied on him. He mistook her for a wild animal and killed her with his spear. In one version of the tale, a satyr mourned her death.
