Der Legende nach erschien Papst Gregor (gest. 604) während der Messfeier der leibhaftige Christus als Schmerzensmann. Gregor ist umgeben von zahlreichen Heiligen: verschiedene Dominikanerheilige und die hl. Katharina (links) als Patronin der Nürnberger Klosterkirche. Für diese Kirche wurde die Tafel von Heinrich Wolff von Wolffstal (gest. 1504) gestiftet. Von besonderem Interesse ist die Darstellung der Leidenswerkzeuge Christi. Die Tafel wird der Werkstatt des Augustineraltars zugeschrieben.
Legend has it that Christ appeared in person as the Man of Sorrows to Pope Gregory (d. 604) as he was celebrating Mass. Gregory is surrounded by numerous saints: various Dominican saints as well as St. Catherine (left), the patron saint of the Nuremberg convent church. The panel was donated for the church by Heinrich Wolff of Wolffstal (d. 1504). The depiction of the Instruments of the Passion is of special interest. The panel is ascribed to the workshop of the Augustinian Altarpiece.
