Only the external wings remain of this altarpiece, which was commissioned by the Schonenfahrer-the company of Lübeck merchants trading with and from Schonen. They carry a complex series of pictures. The altar is dedicated to St. John the Baptist, who is shown on the right-hand wing. There is also a further theme in the works: Both the Baptism of Christ on the right and the picture on the left are variations of the Holy Trinity. God the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost are united in both paintings. In the Baptism scene. God the Father sends the Holy Ghost down from heaven with the words "This is my beloved son". On the left God the Father, suffering like a mortal, is holding his dead son, on whose shoulder the Holy Ghost sits in the form of a dove.
These depictions are connected with the two old-testa - ment figures in the arches below them. On the left the presence of King David speaks of Christ's Rule. On the right, the prophet Isiah corresponds to John the Baptist, prophet and forerunner of Christ.
