This altarpiece comes from the church of the "Burgkloster" monastery, which was dedicated to St. Mary Magdalen. The cycle of carvings and paintings is made up of biblical scenes and incidents relating entirely to her life.
The large central shrine shows her being carried up to heaven by angels, at the hours prescribed for prayer by the church canon, to partake of the heavenly repast. Her body is covered only by her long hair, for her clothes have disintegrated during her long life as a hermit.
On the Predella below, the carvings are concerned with Mary Magdalen's life before her meeting with Christ. They depict the sinner enjoying the pleasures of the hunt in the company of her many suitors.
The left hand wing shows her at the house of Simon the Leper in Bethany. Mary Magdalen kneels at Christ's feet, full of remorse and repentance about her earlier life, which she has now put behind her. The scene below ("Noli me tangere") shows the risen Christ appearing to her first before all others, thus honouring her above all others.
The upper carving on the right hand wing identifies her as Mary of Bethany, sister of Martha, and she is shown here present when their brother Lazarus was raised by Christ from the dead. In the scene below, St. Mary Magdalen is receiving Holy Communion at Bishop Maximinius' Oratory at Aise-en-Provence, shortly before her death.
